Are You Able to Crack It? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Forged the Modern World
There are many candidates to claim the title of “world’s greatest invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, though, that title belongs to the automated sawmill conceived by Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated approximately 10 lumberjacks working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be produced within seven days.”
Owing to their speedy mechanical cutter, which turned timber into planks with almost no human effort, the Dutch could construct vessels more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed a century of Dutch naval, financial and cultural supremacy across the continent and the world.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Device
The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, represented “mankind’s initial authentic industrial machine.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. A single part converted its rotary movement into up-and-down action to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed the rotary motion into a sideway’s motion feeding the timber toward the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log forward a measured step each cycle.
“Each element seemed simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to combine these parts so they acted within a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting with each downward motion while moving with each upward stroke. It was a remarkably intelligent application of fundamental parts.”
