Delhi Rises to Hazardous Smog Following Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" level.
Alarming Pollution Readings
Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the safe threshold set by the WHO.
In some locations, readings of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1800, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable limits.
Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Developments
For the past four years, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous haze that blankets the city as winter approaches.
Nevertheless recently, the recently formed regional government petitioned the judicial authority to seek a modification of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously criticized by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "tradition and public health".
Court Decision and Implementation
To the disappointment of medical and ecological advocates, judges complied with the request, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the Diwali.
During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Many recording stations throughout the capital registered pollution reaching highest levels around late evening to some of the worst measurements recorded during celebrations in at least the past three years.
International Implications
The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also triggered a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to deteriorating atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants coming from across the border following the festivities.
Persistent Pollution Issue
Extremely elevated concentrations of pollution in the city have persisted as a serious problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition showing no improvement.
Around the festival period, the concentration of dangerous airborne contaminants in the environment has been documented to spike to significantly exceeding the peak records ever documented in Beijing, which was once considered as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.
Multiple Contamination Sources
The problem in the capital is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of farming communities.
In these regions, agricultural workers regularly burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.
Public Health and Economic Consequences
Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million people residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to various studies.
These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
Air quality crisis is calculated to be causing ten thousand premature deaths per year in the capital.
